City of Girls was recommended in one of my book clubs. As someone who moved to NYC not so long ago, I was eager to read a story (whether or not fictitious) that would glamorize this city. Elizabeth Gilbert magnifies the life of a not-so-ordinary girl who grew up in the suburbs and moved to the city in the 1930's, right on the brink of WWII. Although the book seldom touches on the actual war going on, it focuses on happier times & the behind the scenes of Lily Playhouse.. A mix of coming of age, sex, theater, & glamour, City of Girls is a great read from cover to cover.

CITY OF GIRLS BY ELIZABETH GILBERT

I was 6 years old when 9/11 happened. To this day, I can remember vivid details, although our memories are faulty cameras. The Only Plane in the Sky is a non-fiction piece that recounts the stories of hundreds of people that lived through that day. From firefighters that risked their lives, to the family members of those who perished, to even Rudy Giuliani and Andy Card... this work of art captures so many different perspectives that together piece the events of that day.

The Hate U Give is another book that was recommended to me from book club. I thought I missed the wave on this one since a movie came out a few years ago... but not true. The Hate U Give brings light to the different worlds we all live in. Angie Thomas helps shift our perspective to see the complexity of the problems that "minority" groups face & how these problems continue in a viscous cycle. Although this book has many layers, overall it is an easy read that really provokes thought & great discussion for book clubs as well!
